MEET OUR ARTISTS
Hi! My name is Asli. I’m a creative individual with a passion for mental health awareness. I believe art has an amazing power to help us heal and understand both ourselves and each other more deeply. I use my art as a way to express my own struggles and to make sense of my journey through mental illness. Art has taught me that it is okay to share my story, to feel my feelings, and to be vulnerable. It has also taught me that I am not alone in these experiences. In learning to share my own story, I have become inspired to help others through their journeys as well.
How did you start making art that empowers people?
I've struggled with my mental health for many years and have often found it difficult to communicate my emotions verbally. As someone who has always loved to create, I have found art to be a way of not only expressing myself artistically, but also communicating some of these complex feelings and sharing my story and struggles. In this way, art has been a large part of my healing process. While it started as a way to reclaim my own voice, it has now become a passion to give voice to others who might also be struggling. In sharing my story and artwork, I hope to help others feel heard and understood. My messages are intended to give comfort to others suffering from mental illness by letting them know they are not alone in this fight.
What do you do to self-care?
To be honest, self-care is something I still struggle with. And that's partly why I create the art that I do! When I create art with self-care messages, it is as much a reminder for myself as it is for others. For me, self-care involves a lot of reminding myself and remembering to allow myself things. Remembering that I am allowed to take breaks, that I am allowed to speak my mind, to disagree, or take time for myself. And also remembering to talk to myself in a positive and compassionate way. I am still growing - as we all are - and I need to constantly keep that in mind. It is also a lot about reconnecting with myself - being aware of how my body feels, if something isn't right and what I need to do in order to feel better, and of course, allowing myself to take up space in order to fix it. It's about being honest with myself and true to who I am underneath everything. For me, this involves a lot of quiet, alone time. Time to think, breathe, sift through all my thoughts, recharge, and absorb information. I also love spending time in nature - especially in the forest!
