Leiana Edwards
Leiana Edwards is a hand-lettering artist based in Chapel Hill, NC. Leiana’s use of bold color combinations, typography, and illustration allow her to convey motivating messages in a fun way. With aspirations of being a dentist, her goal is to make people smile both in her vocation and through her art. With her unique style, Leiana aims to make art that is relatable and serves as a source of positivity, encouragement, and reassurance for anyone who needs it.
How did you start making art that empowers people?
In 2015, I challenged myself to a 365-day handlettering project, where I created a handlettered piece using various mediums every day. Over the course of the year, I fell in love with the art form and started an Instagram account to house my work. I continued posting to the account after the project was complete, transitioning to mostly digital pieces, and found that the quotes and phrases I was posting were not only motivating to me, but others as well. I try to make art that is relatable, and I’ve learned more and more how powerful a simple message of encouragement can be.
What do you do to self-care?
Self-care can take many different forms for me. I enjoy going for walks, journaling, making things, yoga, and reading. But sometimes I find that my selfcare practices take less glamourous forms – like working an extra 20 minutes to finish a task that’s been making me anxious, or cleaning my room. Some days are better than other, but I try to be mindful of what I need to do each day in order to take care of my mental health.
