Interview with Mitch Motivates: Overcoming Addiction and Embracing Motivation
Posted by AJ MartofelIn our latest interview, we had the privilege of sitting down with Mitch Leff, also known as Mitch Motivates, to discuss his remarkable journey from addiction to becoming a motivational force for many, which he covers in his new book "My Addiction, My Superpower: From Mania to Motivates: Twelve Tips for Overcoming Addiction, Crushing Life, and Inspiring Others". Mitch's story is one of resilience, community support, and unwavering self-belief. Here’s a deeper look into his transformative path, pulling some of his most impactful quotes and insights.
THE JOURNEY BEGINS
Mitch Leff grew up in North Jersey with a loving and supportive family. However, despite a seemingly idyllic childhood, Mitch found himself battling addiction at a young age. "There was no reason for me to become a drug addict. It just happened," Mitch recalls, emphasizing the often unpredictable nature of addiction.
His addiction led him through a series of challenging experiences, including arrests and rehab stints. One of his lowest points came during his freshman year at Indiana University, where his life revolved around getting high. "I didn’t go to class, didn’t shower, and all the money I had went to drugs," Mitch admits. It was during this period that Mitch's friends intervened, recognizing the need for him to seek help.
TURNING POINT: SEEKING HELP
The turning point in Mitch’s life came when he made a desperate call to a hotline from a motel room, which eventually led him to his first rehab experience in April 2006. "By talking about what I’ve been through, what happened, and what it’s like today, if even one person hears it, it could potentially help them," Mitch says, reflecting on the importance of sharing his story.
In rehab, Mitch was introduced to the 12-step program, which became a cornerstone of his recovery. He also discovered the power of community support, finding solace in knowing that others shared similar struggles. "The biggest thing was the community. To know that there were other young people to hear stories about was huge for me," he explains.
BUILDING A NEW LIFE
Post-rehab, Mitch continued his recovery journey by moving into a halfway house in the Poconos, where he learned responsibility and discipline. This period was crucial in laying the groundwork for his long-term sobriety. Mitch then transferred to Rutgers University, where he immersed himself in new communities and continued his sober journey.
Mitch emphasizes the concept of "smart feet," which he describes as trusting the guidance of experts and following the right path even when his mind tempted him otherwise. "Sometimes it takes a long time to trust yourself to make the best decisions for yourself. Trust your feet sometimes over your head," Mitch advises.
MITCH MOTIVATES: A NEW CHAPTER
Combining his passion for motivational content with his personal experience, Mitch founded Mitch Motivates. His work involves public speaking, coaching, and writing, with his book "My Addiction, My Superpower" being a significant milestone. "I’ve been able to do these amazing things, and the latest is that I’ve been able to come out with the book to share my story," Mitch shares.
Mitch’s approach to motivation is deeply rooted in his own recovery journey. He draws inspiration from figures like Eric Thomas and Tony Robbins and channels their influence into his work. "I lead by example. My example is that I’ve been through tough stuff, I got over it, and so can you," Mitch asserts.
DAILY PRACTICES AND LONG-TERM VISION
Mitch's daily routine is integral to his sustained sobriety. He starts his day with prayer and meditation, practices he has developed through his spirituality and the 12-step program. "I really start the day with my higher power, understanding that I can’t do this alone," he explains.
For those at the beginning of their recovery journey, Mitch offers a blend of encouragement and realism. "Yes, it’s easier day to day to stay sober, but it almost takes more per day to stay sober. It’s about taking it one day at a time," he says.
THE POWER OF SERVICE
A key element of Mitch’s philosophy is the importance of helping others. Whether through his work or personal interactions, he finds profound fulfillment in service. "The best feeling you ever feel in life is when you’re helping someone. It feels better than any material possession," Mitch highlights.
As Mitch continues to inspire and motivate others, his message remains clear: Recovery is possible, and community support is vital. By sharing his story and dedicating himself to helping others, Mitch Leff embodies the spirit of resilience and hope.
