How did you start making art that empowers people?

I’ve always found it easier to articulate myself visually rather than verbally, and my relationship with my mental health has greatly influenced my art. I’ve had depression, anxiety and other issues for about 5 years. Initially I found it extremely difficult to put into words how I felt, let alone accept my emotions. During the darkest times, I found I was only truly honest in my artwork, and it helped me figure out what I was going through. I also explore the side effects of medication. For example, antidepressants made me shake a lot so I also ponder how movement is perceived. This led me to improve my relationship with myself while communicating honestly & understanding what wellbeing means to me. Now I create work in hope of changing the conversations and ideas around mental health, and to promote positive coping mechanisms.

What do you do to self-care?

I do a LOT of dancing, not good dancing more like shaking around but it’s a great way to transform negative energy. My self-care practices vary from running to drawing to inhaling chocolate, if that’s what I need that’s ok!! They’re all in the aim of reconnecting and being honest with myself about how I feel. I also conduct free Arts Wellness sessions on Zoom, which is for my benefit as much as everyone who comes along!
