Katherine Barker
I’m an illustrator who specializes in positive doodles, filled with bright colors, uplifting messages and happy smiley faces– aiming to make people feel a little bit brighter. I often use my art to show people that it’s okay to feel things and mental health is something we all have and should look after. I truly believe it’s important to raise awareness and understanding which I choose to express through my art.
How did you start making art that empowers people?
I've always liked doing art however since starting at college studying graphic design I found that creating work surrounding positive mental health feels most rewarding to me. I've personally had a fair few struggles with mental illnesses myself and when going through those times I find positive messages and cute illustrations to be really helpful, so I decided to start making some myself. I love the idea of spreading even a tiny bit of positivity to brighten someone's day so I feel as though creating these illustrations is a great way of doing that!
What do you do to self-care?
I find it most beneficial to implement self care into my everyday life, I like to keep a note of how I’m feeling day to day and respond accordingly. Sometimes I’ll find joy in cracking on with some art, other times I like to sit and cuddle my cat whilst enjoying a cup of tea. I think glorifying small moments of my day is where I find true happiness so I like to look at that as a form of self care in itself.
