Cami Zea
Cami is a hand lettering artist, writer, and illustrator living in Northern California. She is a big fan of sad songs and empathy. Her life motto is: “paying attention and staying soft", influenced heavily by Mary Oliver. Her designs often revolve around messages of justice, mental health, and feelings. Art has been a steady companion and tool to process, heal, and grow.
How did you start making art that empowers people?
Throughout my life I have relied heavily on art to act as a comfort during chapters of trauma or loss. That evolved into reaching for an outlet to channel my inner world somewhere outside of myself. I found the art of writing and lettering to be a healing tool- later sharing my words and designs online. To my surprise, the messages that I thought were just for me also provided comfort to others. The honesty of it all seemed to meet people wherever they were at, and it never ever gets old. That is the great magic of art.
What do you do to self-care?
I love cooking myself a nourishing meal with music on or forcing my dog to hug me for long periods of time. I recently incorporated gardening into my weekly routine and the act of working with my hands in this way gets me out of my head and is a healing refuge for my often anxious mind.
