Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services has been a national leader in whole-person mental health and crisis care for 80 years!

Its first-in-the-nation Suicide Prevention Center operates multiple English/Spanish hotlines 24/7, including the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, the national Disaster Distress Helpline for those suffering emotionally from natural or manmade disasters, a new line diverting 911 calls from the LAPD disproportionately connecting Black and Latinx young men to care, as well as Teen Line and LAUSD line.

988 is more than just an easy-to-remember number—it’s a direct connection to compassionate, accessible care and support for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress – whether that is thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis, or any other kind of emotional distress. People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.

As California’s lead 988 agency, Didi Hirsch has led much of the states charge for 988 preparation based on years of partnering with the 13 crisis centers across the state, both public and private, who field over 270,000 calls together a year to the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.

What is it like to work on a crisis hotline?

"People expect that it takes a lot out of you, and it does, but when you’re actually dealing with a crisis, it’s actually very energetic, because you’re confronting pretty strong emotions and you’re not shying away from it.”

“It ends up being very healing.”

What excites you about the launch of 988?

“It cements for our society that mental health is important, and it’s on some level accessible, even when you’re at your darkest points.”

"That people will fall between the cracks before they get a chance to get the help that they deserve.”

Why do youth in particular need 988?

“There’s so many more challenges than when I was a teenager at least. They’re less connected, they’re struggling with so much more. They just need to know that they have somewhere to go.”

“Being able to help support people in their hardest and darkest of times is an amazing gift to give.”

Why do youth in particular need 988?

“They need to be able to pick up the phone, dial 3 digits, and be connected to a compassionate, caring person, because being a teenager isn’t easy these days.”

What is it like to work at a suicide hotline?

“Being able to just give somebody that space, that support, that compassion, that empathy, and that validation, is something that can make such a difference and really save a life.”
